“To Catch a Thief” Inspired Outfit
If I could have a wardrobe entirely out of vintage and retro looks (mostly copied from old movies), I would! I love the elegance and femininity for the styles, especially from the 1940s to 1960s.
Unfortunately that just doesn’t fit my lifestyle, so I settle for making the occasional outfit inspired from these (mostly for church or an evening at the theater). This pink and white set was inspired by an outfit Grace Kelly wears as Francis Stevens in “To Catch a Thief,” which is one of my favorite films! In the movie, her outfit has a flowy pink skirt, pink scarf, and the pink top has white edging and scroll appliqués on it. However, I wanted a pants outfit (I used the pants I made for this set), and I couldn’t find a pink to make the scarf out of that matched the top fabric, so I used white instead, tying it in to the pants. The top I basically got lucky with, and found a brocade remnant of 7/8 yard that was reminiscent of her print, and modified a tee shirt pattern/drafted my own design to get the look I wanted (I did make a mockup, as I knew I only had one shot with this fabric). I wish I had thought of doing a side zipper, but the one I put up the back will work fine and was easier for fitting. Now I have a movie-inspired look that will see use in my everyday life!
