Five Favorites - Fall Edition






To change things up a bit, I thought I’d share a few new favorite things I’ve come across recently, from both sewing and life in general. 

First, my new sewing basket. I’ll admit, a sewing basket is not an essential part of my hobby, but it is handy to have one around sometimes, and my old one was getting pretty faded. So, when I saw this one, I decided to make a change, and here we are! 


Second, this maple sugar candy. I am not a huge candy person, but I love to get some maple sugar candy in the fall, so I was excited to find this cute set (and it’s even organic! Not that that makes it “healthy,” but at least it’s free from pesticides).   

Next, I really enjoyed reading this book. Every year, I try to read at least one book on leadership. I have found it really helps me keep a good attitude about work, along with learning about myself and how to interact with those around me. How to Lead when You’re Not in Charge had so many good points, thoughtful insights, and new ideas to ponder. I would highly recommend it!

Fourth, Wash and Gone. This is a Pellon product for embroidery that I have used many times over the years I’ve been sewing. I haven’t had to use it for a while, but I’ve had a number of projects lately where I had to use it again, and it is so handy. It looks like interfacing, but it dissolves in water when you’re done. You can see I drew my design on it, stitched it, and later, after cutting as much of it away as possible, the rest just disappears when it’s soaked. Most often I use it to stabilize a project, and then it’s gone once you no longer need it. It’s fantastic stuff! 

Last, this shirt. This rayon/polyester blend knit is SO soft (albeit a bit wrinkly!) and comfortable. It is grey on the outside and black on the inside, so I made the sleeves to roll up and show the contrast. It can be a rather basic shirt if I let down the buttons, but it’s fun to have the little details to add interest.

Lace Trimmed Blue Top

  I wore this blue top the other day to work and then for a Frosted Coffee run afterwards (I’m trying very hard to think spring these days, despite temps not quite there yet…). I used an old Simplicity pattern, but Butterick 6847 would work as well (neither has lace, I just measured around the bottom once it was together and bought enough to add). I couldn’t find stretch lace locally that was as wide as I had pictured in my head, so I’ll have to be a little careful when sitting down, but I just love how the white lace really makes the whole outfit pop!

Wool Vest

If you sew, then you know that if  you ever see something in the store, a picture, a catalog, etc., and wish you could make that exact garment yourself, because they're out of your size, or you know you could do it for less money, or could tweak some detail about it, or maybe just love the fabric but want a different piece of clothing out of it, then you also know that your odds of finding that fabric on a bolt in a fabric store are low.   Really low.   In fact, probably nonexistent.   That’s what I thought when I saw a really cute vest outfit that came up in a google search of fall outfits. I saved the picture to keep in mind for later, figuring I'd be able to do something with the idea in the future.  But then I found the perfect fabric (almost identical to the picture!) only a few weeks later.  I pulled out this Simplicity pattern,  got to work, and now I have the exact garment I had wanted in a warm wool for the fall and winter weather.

Blue Floral Cutout Gingham Ruffle Shirt

Whew - how’s that for a long post title?! I got this cool fabric from a friend’s grandma, who was like an “extra” grandma to me. She was a big sewist who passed away a few years ago, and my friend asked if I would like some of the fabric she had collected over the years. I said yes, and one of the pieces in the box was this tiny gingham with a floral cutout and outline. It’s one of the most unique fabrics I’ve run across in my years of sewing. I decided to make New Look pattern #6732, which I think fit the fabric perfectly. I liked how  the pattern turned out enough to make it a second time, but I did a simpler version with a linen-look cotton I found (I did lengthen the bodice on both, and the ruffle on the coral one, since I am a bit long through the torso). Now I have a pretty shirt to help me remember a special lady.
