Black Denim Jacket
Despite having made a jean jacket I’m thrilled with from a Silhouette pattern, I did still really want to try this one from Simplicity (3168). I really debated about it, but a sewist on instagram made a beautiful one and gave the pattern a glowing review, so I decided to risk it.
I had made a black denim jacket years ago from Butterick 5616 that I was never really thrilled with the fit of (it had 3/4 length sleeves that turned out really wide when extended to full length) or the mandarin collar I chose (turns out that’s not really my style), so I’d decided to make a new one reusing the (rather expensive) buttons from the old one.
I really like the fit of this jacket, and would rate it just below the Silhouette one, but I would definitely do the welt pockets differently next time. It is much easier to get the flap from the pocket fabric itself than to have the extra piece of fabric and do it as the pattern says. I would probably reach for the Silhouette one before this one also because of the collar. This Simplicity one has a collar stand, needed because of the cape that can be made to go with it, but since I’m not making a cape, it’s an extra/unnecessary step. But I really was impressed with this one and would definitely make it again!
