Brown Set & Halloween Movies
I wore the set I made last year into the ground, so it was time to make a new one! Casual matching sets seem to be all the rage this year, so why not jump on that train, right?! I found this brown French Terry fabric and figured it would be cozy for this fall and winter. I had been itching to make one of the other views from McCalls 8343 ever since I made view C in this post, so I decided this was my chance. It made up easily (I got lucky with a zipper that matched exactly), and it’s wonderful to have another heavier set for the chilly mornings and evenings. I have a feeling I’ll be relaxing many evenings in it…
Speaking of relaxing, I would love to say I’m into scary movies… but I’m not! I know it’s that time of year, but when I pick something to watch in the evening to chill to, it’s rarely anything creepy or spooky. However, I thought I’d share some of the movies I do enjoy around Halloween, which I consider being on the scarier side, but I’m sure many people do not!
Arsenic and Old Lace - You have to have the right sense of humor to appreciate this one - I have friends who love it and others who couldn’t stand it. It features Cary Grant in some of his finest physical comedy, but since the plot line is about two old ladies (his aunts) killing single men to “help” them out of their loneliness and a serial killer as Grant’s brother, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But whatever it says about me, it’s one of my favorite screwball comedies!
Van Helsing - Great action, fantastic costumes and hilarious one-liners help make this intriguing variation on Dracula (plus Frankenstein and werewolves) fun to watch, despite (spoiler alert!) not having a HEA.
Crimson Peak - Again, this is a rather sad story, but has some wonderful moments in it (despite a fairly heavy creepy factor…). The mystery gets solved, but don’t expect a happy ending…
Dracula Untold - One of my absolute favorite Dracula retellings! I love the backstory they give and the possibility of happiness in the future.
Notorious - One of Alfred Hitchcock’s finest with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. The plot involves spying on former Nazis to the greater and greater risk of Bergman while Grant figures out how much she means to him. Quite serious, but has a happy ending.
Anyway, happy sewing and movie watching!
