Flouncy Skirt

Another self-drafted skirt! I feel like I could have done a summer series this year with the skirts I made all being out of straight strips of fabric with elastic waists and based on measurements. Maybe I still will…

Anyway, this skirt took a top layer that was 8.5” tall by 4” bigger than my hips (this one needs a little extra to have room for the elastic casing). There are then two layers of ruffles, 7” tall by 24” and two under layers, 6” wide by 4” bigger than my hips.

To make, sew each piece together along the short edge to make it into a circle (you should have five circles when done). Then hem your two ruffle pieces 1/2” up (I used a twin needle to do this). Next run two rows of gathering stitches along the tops of the ruffle pieces. Pull the gathered stitches to bring the pieces down to the same circumference as the two under layer pieces. Baste together, so you have two joined pieces instead of four individual pieces.

Take your top piece and sew to one of the joined pieces.

Next attach the other joined pieces to the under layer of one that has the top piece on it, leaving the hemmed ruffle free. Now you should see your two ruffles hanging free

Make a casing in the top piece, and add your elastic. Then hem the bottom under layer piece, pull out all you basing/gathering stitches, and your skirt is finished!

This skirt can be adjusted for length simply by adding the same number of inches to each piece. I made this one out of a knit, so the seams did not need to be finished off any further, but it could definitely be made from a woven as well.
