Baby Gifts for New Mothers
I’ve had a lot of friends have babies over the years, and long ago I decided to do more of a a “new mom” gift than a baby gift. Babies get lots of gifts, and while these are fun, I try to help the mom and family out, since a new baby is a big adjustment! I’ve really tried to pay attention over the years to what they can really use, and here are some of my recommendations.
Burp Cloths - Everyone can use and one can never have too many! They’re easy to make, easy to personalize, and often inexpensive since remnants work well. I also try to pick up remnants of terry cloth, chenille, and solid flannels for backing it (and inside layering) just to have on hand. I make some with two layers of flannel, some with three, and some with one side flannel and one from terry or chenille. I’ve had so many people tell me the handmade ones were their favorite!
Bibs - A lot of the same principles as the burp cloths. I usually do some classic and some bandanna style.
Hand Lotion - I feel like spending time around babies means lots of hand washing, so I often give hand lotion as a gift to help prevent drying out and cracking in the new mom’s hands. My favorite brands are L’occitaine (if you feel like a splurge), or Burt’s Bees.
Books - I grew up reading some fantastic children’s books, so I often give a couple to start the family’s collection. Even if the baby won’t appreciate them for a while, they’re a gift they can grow into.
Gift Certificate - Usually for food, since bringing a meal can be difficult (If you can do it, go for it! I’ve always found them much appreciated, but with some families having food sensitivities, I’ve found gift cards easier and less stress), I often grab a gift card either to a restaurant, or even a grocery store, since that gives a lot of freedom to choose.
Big Brother/Sister Gift - (Never skip this - you’ll break hearts!) I often try to make this, but it is totally dependent on the situation. If it’s multiple siblings, I might do a game or craft/activity book they all can enjoy, but if it’s just one, I’ll aim for something that personally resonates with that age. My goal is for something the kids can entertain themselves with so the mom can get things done without interruptions.
Here are some items I occasionally do, but only if I think the recipient will truly appreciate them or won’t get too many from other sources. These include:
Baby Blanket - I keep mine simple - a 45” square (a coworker of mine jokes that the baby will slither out if you make them smaller!) of one layer of flannel, hemmed with a fancy stitch. I don’t always do them, because babies often receive so many, but it’s fun to do as part of a matching set.
Baby Clothes - Usually not newborn size, and only if I know they’ll be appreciated and I can get the season and size right, since there won’t be any exchanges if I’m wrong!
Stuffed Toys - Again, only if I’m sure there won’t be a surplus.
